Coolio In A Cook-Off

Did you watch Coolio on The Food Network's Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off? You wouldn't be alone. The Food Network posted the highest ratings in its history last month.

We'd like to think that The Food Network's dramatic increase in viewership is directly related to the Ghetto Gourmet. After, all, who can resist chicken so good it falls off the bone or a caprese salad so tasty it makes your drawers drop?

Coolio came in second to Lou Diamond Phillips despite breaking out the big guns like Soul Rolls and a newer, Guy Fieri-approved version of his Cool-A-Cado, winning a more-than-respectable $10,000 for Music Saves Lives. To which we say, Shaka, Coolio. Shaka forever.

Marc Maron and My Damn Channel: WTF

Posted in WTF with tags Marc Maron, WTF, podcast, Adam Carolla, My Damn Channel on 11/9/2011 7:28:29 AM by Rob Barnett

I started my career in radio and I started My Damn Channel as a response to getting tossed out of radio in 2006.

Podcasts are not new, but in the past few years, a number of brilliantly talented people with brains and balls decided to head to their garages and go punk - bringing new shows to the masses on the Internet - without any of the soul-killing, corporate execs able to stop these brave rebels from creating completely original "radio" that puts the "F" back in Freedom.

I created Free FM back in 2004 to give awesome talent like Adam Carolla a radio show that harkened back to the earliest days of freeform radio....a form never done better than the way it's still being done today by Howard Stern.

When I got "shit-canned" as Adam loves to say - and could no longer protect him from the devils - he got "shit-canned" too. Adam took to his garage to build a monster audience for his podcast and My Damn Channel continues to put our cash where our heart is as a paid sponsor.

Today, we pony up again to become a proud sponsor of WTF with Marc Maron. If you know this show, then you simply need to know that I could no longer sit back and cheer for Marc without jumping in to support him. If you're uninitiated, then his words will be better than mine and I encourage you to watch the video of Marc's recent keynote speech given at the premiere comedy festival, Just for Laughs in Montreal.

Like with Adam Carolla, you'll hear My Damn Channel artists and comedians on WTF with Marc Maron. From time to time, Marc will tell you about the good shit we're doing here to premiere original series with great talent and without any of the corporate red tape that used to get in our way.

And we've now got a whole new Marc Maron channel to check out regularly when you're on My Damn Channel, featuring his podcasts, videos, extras and excerpts with a link to subscribe and donate like we did to a rare talent taking the truth by the horns.

How To Be A Vlogger: Lesson Two

(Image via)

So. You've made your first vlog and told everyone that you didn't know what you were doing.

Sweet. What's next?

Well, one tactic that especially adventurous vloggers like to do is to treat the videoblogging experience like Twitter.

Like BAD Twitter.

Like the Twitter that you're afraid of finding in your timeline so you never even log on. Like the Twitter that you used to write when you didn't know what Twitter was and you thought that Facebook was just a fad and why can't we all just go back to MySpace already?!

Like this:

And-- just like last week-- this seems to work best when you don't have anything interesting or informative to share with the audience! People love being bored to death! It's crazy how that works! Those YouTube subscriptions should just start rolling in!

If you try out any of our vlogging tips, let us know how it goes-- especially if any of them work out for you, because, frankly, that's something we can only imagine. Seriously.

Come back next week when we'll discuss how to deal with the haters...

Don Was is a Super Producer Who Brings Us Superstars

Did you guys see Don Was on American Idol last season as Jimmy Iovine's right-hand man? Don is a super producer who works with superstars like Bonnie Raitt, Elton John and The Rolling Stones, and now he's bringing us an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the recording session for a "Personal Revolution," a song from the legendary Ziggy Marley's latest album, Wild and Free.

We have nothing else to say but that you should STOP DOING WHATEVER ELSE YOU'RE DOING AND WATCH THIS VIDEO RIGHT NOW.

Thanks. Now you can go about the rest of your day feeling good about yourself since you've already treated yourself to something awesome.

Happy Birthday David Wain and Coolio!

Yesterday was OUR birthday, today is the birthday of two My Damn Channel stars: David Wain and Coolio!

Did we know this when we started working with them? No!

Does this mean anything to anyone but us? No!

Are we glad that these things all seem relevant enough to put into a single blog post? Yes! Yes! A thousand times, yes!

In honor of the anniversaries of their birth, here are our (my) favorite Wainy Days and Cookin' With Coolio episodes:

"Donna"

and "Caprese Salad"

Happy Birthday to everyone who has a birthday to today-- even if you aren't a successful comedian/writer/director/cult-comedy icon or a rapper/actor/chef/juggalo!

Remembering The Big Man, Clarence Clemons

June 18, 2011

The world just lost a piece of its soul tonite. Clarence Clemons has been an inspiration, a hero, a touchstone, and a non-stop deliverer of the big sound, big love, and big joy to me and all of my closest friends. It's hard to think of this world without him.

I rarely cry. But I'm crying tonite. From the first minute we heard him on vinyl - and throughout every night we saw him walk onto that stage - everyone who loved Clarence knew we had the biggest, baddest, best man at our side.

The lifelong thrill of loving Bruce & Clarence & The E Street Band might be what it feels like to be addicted to comics and Superheroes. We're dedicated to getting together with people of like-minds and like-souls -- all of us looking up to the image of the friendships we want - experiencing the ultimate teamwork we know is possible - and the hardest part about tonite is figuring out how to handle the loss of the image of permanence we felt every time that man took the stage.

I have been Clarence's fan and friend for almost 40 years. His death is a tremendous loss to all of my best friends and to everyone who loves his sound and his gracious soul. Let's send love to Clarence, to his big family and friends, and to Bruce and the entire E Street Family.

Book of Mormon Sweepstakes

So if you're here on My Damn Channel reading this blog, then you're OBVIOUSLY in the top 1% of cultured Americans, fingers no doubt coated with ink from the latest New York Times book review, the scent of a well-aged Malbec still lingering in your nostrils from last night's upscale wine tasting.

And you're undoubtedly a lover of the finer things in life: air travel, social satire, Broadway musicals.  Lucky for you, we've rolled all of your interests into one amazing sweepstakes opportunity.  In honor of My Damn Channel's new show Gigi, we're flying one lucky winner to New York to see the new hit musical The Book of Mormon, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and starring Gigi himself, Josh Gad.

So put down your Chaucer, readjust your monocle, and head on over to our Facebook page to enter for your chance to win.  And what the hell, here's the Gigi trailer again.  YOU'RE WELCOME.

Gigi Premieres March 23

Our pal Josh Gad is, as they say, blowin' up big time, with supporting roles in big-budget Hollywood melodramas and a co-lead role in the new Broadway hit The Book of Mormon, the latter of which is currently making the critics swoon, Outer Darkness be damned.  And Josh will also be on the Today Show tomorrow morning, Saturday March 19th, to further his Gadian agenda.  So set your alarm, wake up early, and tune in to NBC.

If that wasn't enough, Josh is set to unleash the final prong of his multilevel media-domination masterplan next week in the form of Gigi: Almost American, which premieres right here on My Damn Channel next week, starting March 23.

Part Borat, part Latka Gravas, and all Gad, Gigi is the befuddled, accident-prone outsider lurking inside all of us: earnest, well-meaning, and utterly clueless.  So stop by next Wednesday, grab a pig dog, roll down your windows, and howl at the moon.

Nice Try, Academy

As we already pointed out a couple days ago, this year’s Oscar nominations were announced this week, sending pop culture dorks the world over into a frenzy as everyone scrambled to figure out who was superior to who -- the douchebag computer programmer, the stammering king, James Franco’s gross-ass arm, etc. But c’mon. We all know the Oscars are a sham created by Free Masons to launder money from their cockfighting ring (thanks, Wikipedia!). Who cares who did the best job ugly-ing themselves up for a role, or which hairpiece was the least ridiculous? The really impressive filmmaking achievements are all right here, on My Damn Channel…

Best Tapestry of Lies and Deceit, Horrible People Murder, alcoholism, infidelity. General rudeness. It’s all par for the course for A.D. Miles’ soap opera. Who needs subtle and naturalistic performances when arched eyebrows, leering, and melodramatic pauses will get the job done just as well? Just watch your back. Somebody’s probably waiting to stab you back there.

Best Tilapia, Cookin’ with Coolio Coolio is a man of many talents. Rapping, acting, gravity-defying braids. But did you know he’s also an accomplished chef? Well, you do now. And while he may not headed on Top Chef any time soon, but hey, he’s the “Fantastic Voyage” guy! Teaching you how to cook! ‘Weird’ Al never did a parody of anything Emeril Lagasse ever did. Just sayin’.

Bob Dylan Signs Six Book Deal?!

It's no secret that we love Bob Dylan at My Damn Channel, so we were extremely excited to read on IFC.com that it's rumored Bob Dylan has signed a six book deal, and will continue his enlightening, though typically enigmatic, memoir series "Chronicles".  The first volume was released in 2004, so it's been a while since we've had the privilege to enter the mind of Mr. Dylan.

And even though it's just a rumor, we're confident that it's gonna happen.  Why?  Well, we first heard the news via IFC, who just so happen to have content from their new series "Portlandia" on My Damn Channel.

Coincidence?  I think not!

So while we're waiting for "Portlandia" to premiere tomorrow at 10:30pm on IFC, and for the next Dylan volume to come out in who knows how long, enjoy this performance from Sweet Pea Atkinson, a soul singing legend who has recorded with Bob Dylan.
